Prof. Balakrishnan, is the Associate Director of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His main areas of research include Aerospace Electronic Systems, Information Security, and Numerical Electromagnetics, High Performance Computing and Networks, Digital Library and Speech Processing. He has published over 200 papers in international and national journals.

 

Prof. N. Balakrishnan received his B.E (Hons.) in Electronics and Communication from the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, University of Madras in 1972 and a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore in 1979. He subsequently joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) as an Assistant Professor. His main areas of research include Numerical Electromagnetics, High Performance Computing and Networks, Polarimetric Radars and Aerospace Electronic Systems, Information Security, Digital Library and Speech processing. He established the Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (SERC), the National Centre for Science Information and the Centre for Microprocessor Applications at IISc.

 

Among the awards and recognitions that he has won are Padma Shri , Government of India, (2002), JC Bose Fellowship, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, (2007), Homi J. Bhabha Award for Applied Sciences (2004), Millennium Medal of the Indian National Science Congress (2000), Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary Lecture Award of INSA for the year 2001, Platinum Jubilee Lecture of the Indian Science Congress (1997) and UNESCO/ROSTSCA Young Scientist Award in 1986.

 

He is presently the Associate Director of the Indian Institute of Science, and Professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering and SERC.
