Book Launch
The Asian Nature Conservation Foundation (ANCF) in association with Strand Book Stall, Bangalore, and Alliance Francaise, Bangalore, organised the launch of the book ‘The Story of Asia’s Elephants’ authored by Dr. Raman Sukumar and published by Marg.
The event was held at the Alliance Francaise, Bangalore, on Friday, 10 February , 2011, from 6.00 pm. Mr. Girish Karnad, eminent playwright and theatre personality, was the Chief Guest.
Ms. Vidya Virkar, the proprietor of Strand Book Stall, welcomed the guests and introduced the Chief Guest. Mr. Karnad then formally released the book and shared his impressions on the book and its author.
Mr. Thomas Mathew, Executive Director ANCF, formally introduced Dr. Sukumar who then gave a detailed and absorbing audio- visual presentation on the subject of the book. The presentation was followed by an interactive session with the audience.
The book, which is Dr Sukumar’s fourth on the Asian Elephant , is an ecological and cultural history of the species and is the first single volume to comprehensively cover the history of Asia’s elephants. Profusely illustrated with images of the elephant in art and sculpture from ancient to contemporary times, offering new historical interpretations, the book draws upon a wide range of literary texts. A labour of love, it took Dr. Sukumar eight years of research and many miles of travel to complete!
Copies of the book were made available by Strand Book Stall at a discount and experienced brisk sales.
